There are a few things that I really like that are in the category of “nutraceuticals” or over the counter vitamins or supplements. These have beneficial actions and I have my own pets on some of the products. Many of them are available at the pet stores or Amazon.
Oratene water additive is a supplement you add to the drinking water for dogs and cats that helps to disinfect the mouth. It helps cut down on the bacteria load in the mouth. This will often help with mild halitosis. It is not a substitution for brushing or routine dental cleaning. Basically, you add this product to their drinking water and use it in their bowl. I have not had any pets refuse to drink the water with this added to it. Here is the link for this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-King-Veterinarian-Drinking-Additive/dp/B00BRNH0V6?crid=2TTFZ1AE8AVOV&keywords=oratene+for+dogs&qid=1547497574&sprefix=oratene%2Caps%2C194&sr=8-2-spons&ref=sr_1_2_sspa&psc=1&smid=A2GSRZZTYENLRL
Dasuquin with MSM is a supplement to help the joints of dogs (not cats). It helps protect the cartilage in the joints and helps the fluid in the joints to be as healthy as possible. This is a great supplement for aging dogs or dogs that have had previous injuries or surgeries on their joints. Anytime there is a previous injury or surgery for a joint arthritis sets in first in that area. There are different sizes depending on your pets’ weight so make sure to get the correct product. It’s basically a vitamin for the joints to help keep them as healthy as possible. https://www.amazon.com/Nutramax-Dasuquin-Chews-Large-Count/dp/B0081KTPQQ?keywords=dasuquin+msm&qid=1547497853&sr=8-3-spons&ref=sr_1_3_sspa&psc=1
Cosequin for cats is a similar product as Dasuquin. It works in the same way to help protect the cartilage and the joint fluid as healthy as possible. This would be great in older cats to help slow down arthritis. We are limited in the arthritis medication for cats. This is also being used in cats that have chronic issues with cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). It comes in a capsule that you open and sprinkle on the food. https://www.amazon.com/Nutramax-Cosequin-Capsules-80-Count/dp/B000F4W02M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1547498220&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=cosequin+for+cats&psc=1
Obviously consult our clinic before starting anything for you pet, but these are a few things that I think can help a lot of our patients. At the very least, they can help slow down the progression of some issues.
